Day Eleven: Frome, England
Nice Amps, originally uploaded by Rich in Orderly Manor.
Awake to bright blue sunshine morning in Frome. A hilariously English breakfast situation with Bob, Rob, Paul and Mars that i can’t go in to except to say there was fire and. A walk through the fields to the town to get some magazines and Maltesers. It so goood to be back home. Bright and crisp autumn day. Road signs, privet hedges, small cars and off licenses are all reminders of my growing up life. Internet time and a swift pint before getting a ride with Mark the promoter, over to the venue in Frome. Friendly chap is obviously a genuine fan… He and Bob hit it off like a house on fire.
The venue is nice – an old grain barn refitted to a pleasant music space. If its good enough for Robert Plant then… The amps in England are way better than anything i’ve had before; nice Vox, nice silverface Fender. The people are really good to us and this show, originally planned as a warm up, feels way more legit. A quick wander through the freezing town with Amanda for some tea and then its show time. Dumb Waiters is off the hook as usual but then i wonder if the audience is really getting in to it before i realize they are just taking in the full Talk Talk Talk experience. At half time things are good. Hot gig, people singing, sweat, bright and loud; by the end there’s a mosh pit for India. Don’t see that surge everyday. Afterwards there’s these two kids who drove a ways to see the gig and they are ecstatic about the show and get their poster signed… i think the girl’s name was Faye. Its great to see the exuberance for this music in younger fans… it deserves it.
Later i get to meet Roger Morris – really lovely chap and most complimentary about the handling of the old stuff; though he won’t show me the original indecipherable guitar parts! A humourous cab ride back to the hotel with Rob, Mars & Bob… Quiet now.
Hey Rich!
Don’t know if you’ll read this but i really hope you do.. I haven’t been able to stop smiling all day since finding this! I am Faye you mention in this post. What a great gig that was, i still have the poster on my wall and cherish the photo of you, me and mars.
After hearing the furs were doing another tour i was looking you guys up and came across your other bands The Pleased and Kings and Queens and i’m really loving all of your work. Cant believe you were in a band with Joanna Newsom, i’m also a huge fan of hers and was lucky enough to see her a few years ago. There’s not a lot of The Pleased’s tunes on youtube but i have been listening to no style and we are the doctor on repeat! I managed to track down an album online and cannot wait for it to arrive.
I went to see the furs at the 02 in Bristol last week and i couldn’t take my eyes off of you for the entire time. Honestly you made me tingle all over.
If the pleased ever do a reunion gig i absolutely have to be there. I would travel half way around the world to see you guys! My email is fayehatescheese@hotmail.co.uk if you could add me to a mailing list of something?
sending so much love and respect your way.. Faye x
