Day 1. Song One

01. January 2013 Writing 0

Fail.

That was my original post at midnight of day one. Turns out on day three, at breakfast, i realise there’s something to this song. It’ll be finished by end of week…1-IMG_1639

Anyway, what are we doing here? Well, the Furs tour for new year was canceled. Its been a few years since i really had any time to concentrate on my own music due to touring and general life paralysis. I know i had a good band for a while. I know i had some decent songs. But its been since 2010 since i played a show. I’ve recorded a handful of songs and i have another couple of handfuls unfinished, half way there. They get lost on the hard drive, in pocket books, behind the sofa, in my head, or remain half-done trapped on a cd in my car like a musical General Zod spinning uncontrolably into even deeper obscurity. HALF DONE is the key here. So instead of touring i thought i’d write and record seven songs in the seven days i’d have been gone. From scratch; no work ahead of each day. Yes, i thought it sounded easy, fun and rewarding. I got inspired by the ideas in my head; i’ll just pull out one each day… i can practically HEAR the perfect cocktail of warm toned loose guitar, head to head with Neu beats and airless vocals. I’ll limit the palette of what i can use sonically to keep it tight. Its going to be incredible! Creativity shall prevail and finally i’ll be able to focus.

You know what; writing songs is hard solo. Rewarding and sometimes fun. But hard to do. Extracting the waves you hear in your head and getting them fully realised is often deadly to the initial spark. Like dandelion seeds they float, intricately fragile before being gently captured. MOST often they are lost in the process. Especially when the clock is ticking.

I’ll be using Oblique Strategies, tacos and trying not to stare.

Anyway, this is what is up at (mobile) Orderly Manor for the first week of 2013. Who wants to make a project?
